Figurative language can be found in so many places these days including the Central Florida Future. A great example is an article written by Shannon Smith. Shannon argues that anonymous comments made on the internet does not absolve the ignorance that comes along with these comments. She protests against the common affiliation of idiocy with beautiful women. She claims to have experienced first-hand the criticism and sexist judgment geared towards women. In stating her view point, she uses a lot of figurative language such as metaphors and sarcasm or extreme exagerration.
Metaphor:
“If you’re among those women who deal with this barrage of sexist assumptions on a daily basis, don’t fret; even the cavemen eventually evolved.”
She uses the “cavemen” as a comparison to the guys who attack women with their misogynistic comments. Associating these guys with cavemen also associates them with the same connotation that the term “caveman” brings along with it. This comparison makes the guys seem stupid, unevolved, and below-par.
Sarcasm/Exaggeration:
“This commenter, whom I’d like to term “Diplomatic Joe,” used the blanket anonymity of the Internet to ever-so-delicately express his very misogynistic assumptions.”
Shannon also uses sarcasm or exagerration to prove her point that the sexist judgement was stated in a manner that was anything but delicate.
